Rangelands Layers

Grasslands vital for biodiversity.

Rangelands are expansive areas characterized by a variety of vegetation, including grasses, shrubs, and occasional trees.

Rangeland Systems

Identifies seven major rangeland biomes using WWF ecoregions, showing ecological diversity and vegetation drivers.

Land Use & People

Maps human-altered ecosystems based on sustained land use, revealing global patterns of anthropogenic impact.

data source

Shows Indigenous and community land and resource rights across rangelands, highlighting territorial recognition and access.

data source

Highlights global socio-environmental conflicts, highlighting community mobilizations and patterns of environmental inequality.

data source

Describes livestock types, practices, and spatial patterns to support agriculture, food security, and sustainability analysis.

data source

Maps global distribution of key livestock species over rangelands at ~10 km resolution (2015 reference year).

data source

Classifies rangeland land cover into 11 types at 10 m resolution, supporting land-use and change analysis.

data source

Maps over 950 pastoralist groups globally, detailing names, locations, and livestock breeds across rangelands.

data source

Shows population distribution over rangelands at 100-meter resolution, expressed as people per grid cell.

Land & Ecosystem

Tracks global grassland change, distinguishing cultivated and natural types using vegetation and land-use thresholds.

data source

Measures annual plant biomass production minus respiration, showing vegetation productivity across global rangelands.

data source

Maps soil carbon stocks (0–30 cm) using machine learning, supporting soil health monitoring in rangelands.

Shows global surface water location and persistence in rangelands from 1984 to 2021 at 30 m.

data source

Tracks 30 m tree cover increases across rangelands using forest height threshold aligned with FAO definition.

data source

Identifies forest loss across rangelands as conversion from forest to non-forest states due to disturbances.

data source

Classifies rangelands into hyperarid to dry subhumid zones based on UNCCD aridity index definitions.

data source

Wildlife & Wildlands

Earth’s most biologically rich—yet threatened—terrestrial regions.

data source

Quantifies habitat intactness trends globally, including change, local contribution, and sensitivity at 1 km² resolution.

data source

Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) are sites that contribute to the global persistence of biodiversity.

data source

Maps threatened amphibians, mammals, and reptiles in rangelands, categorized as Vulnerable to Critically Endangered.
